First XI Match Reports

Saturday, 4th November 2006 ~ Northern Senior League

Bourton Rovers 2-0 Shortwood United

Rovers continued their good start to the season with a comfortable victory over the  league leaders from Nailsworth.

With Ben Acock unavailable, Matt Winter had to step into the back three with Tim Hudson and Gary Clark and there were recalls for Stuart Hughes and Ryan Newhook who missed last Saturday's cup win in Cheltenham.

In the first half both teams cancelled each other out with the only incident was when a superb cross by Keelan Gilbert found the head of debutant Chris Mills who duly headed home, only for the linesman to raise his flag and disallow the goal.  Bourton started the second half with more spring in their step and deservedly took the lead on 60 minutes when Hughes through ball found Mills who blasted the ball into the net to make it 1-0, R.Newhook nearly made it two moments later when he hit a thunderous 25 yarder which was blocked on the line.

The home team did make it two with 15 minutes left when skipper for the day Hughes curled a delightful 20 yard free kick into the top corner of the visitors net which David Beckham would of been proud off.

Shortwood eventually had their first shot of the match with 5 minutes to go, when keeper Andy Herbert was left stranded following a through ball, but the visitors striker saw his lobbed shot hit the bar then hit Winter on the head and the ball eventually rolled along the line to safety.

This win lifted Bourton into the top six of the league and next week they make the long trek to bottom side Viney St Swithans in the deepest Forest of Dean.
