First XI Match Reports
Saturday, 7th October 2006 ~ Northern Senior League
Bourton made the long trip to the Forest of Dean without the injured Mark Hamilton and midfielder Stuart Hughes but there were recalls for fit again Keelan Gilbert and Ben Acock and also a 1st start this season for Graham Newhook.
Rovers started the game with a new formation, with five playing in midfield and Mark Gainford up front by himself to try to stop the title favourites playing their normal passing game which would of been hard anyway has the groundsman forgot to cut the grass which in places was about six inches!
Bourton's plan worked and the home team couldn't get through the rovers rearguard and it was the villagers who took a surprise lead on 25 minutes when a meandering run through the midfield from Dave Davanzo ended with a superb cross which found left back Ryan Newhook in the right wing position who smashed the ball home for his first goal of the season. Broadwell should of levelled before the break but Andy Herbert in the Rovers goal saved two one on one's after basic errors in the Rovers defence.
Rovers could of gone 2 up at the start of the second half when Matt Winter played in Gainford who shot wide when he should of hit the target at least. Broadwell kept penetrating the visitors defence aiming mainly for 6'10 inch Craig Lewis who was a pain for Bourton all afternoon but Gary Clark dealt with him superbly.
Bourton were soaking up the pressure quite comfortably and were catching the home team out on the counter attack and could of gone 2 up when G.Newhook and Winter played a nice one two through the home teams defence only for Winter to trip over the long grass at the crucial moment and 5 minutes later the same combination broke through again but this time it was G.Newhook who tripped over the grass.
With 10 minutes left Broadwell got their equaliser when a corner was knocked over and Lewis headed goalwards only to see it bounce up awkwardly and hit Duncan Habbitts on the arm and the ref harshly gave a penalty, which Lewis converted with ease.
Rovers went straight up the other end and should of snatched victory but Sub Kevin Hunt fired over from 10 yards, that miss was crucial and with 2 minutes left big man Lewis picked up on a mistake by Clark and crossed for Steve Blaby to prod home from 4 yards and leave Bourton gutted that they got nothing out of the game which they didn't deserve.
This saturday Bourton entertain Cheltenham Civil Service.
