First XI Match Reports
Wednesday, 9th August 2006 ~ Northern Senior League Cup Round 1
Rovers started this league cup first round tie under the new management of Matt Winter and Andrew Herbert and proceeded to the second round where they will travel to Gloucester and play Gala Wilton in the last sixteen.
With Rovers missing several players through cricket commitments there were call ups for Mark Hamilton first game for 8 years and Tim Hudson first game for 3 years.
Brockworth started the more brightly but failed to turn possession into goals and it was Bourton who drew first blood when David Davanzo played a 30 yard pass through to Winter who coolly lobbed the keeper from 18 yards, it was soon two when this time Winter played in Davanzo who smashed it home from 20 yards. Stuart Hughes nearly made it three with a long range effort but his shot was slightly high and Rovers went in 2-0 up at the interval.
The second half started with Brockworth playing a more aggressive game and were soon back in it when a slick move enabled the Brockworth centre forward to smash home from 10 yards, they were soon level when a long throw was missed by the entire Bourton defence and it left a simple tap in for the visitors.
The next 15 mins were end to end with Herbert in the home sides goal pulling of some fine saves, but on 75 minutes Mark Payne curled home from the edge of the box to put Rovers back in front, 5 minutes later the hard working Mark Gainsford put Hughes through who calmly rounded the keeper to make it 4-2.
With Brockworth now down and out Rovers made it 5 when skipper's Ben Acock cross deceived the Brockworth keeper and flew into the net in the final minute to make it an emphatic victory for the new Herbert -Winter partnership.
